The substance was reportedly discovered by accident when an ambulance’s tire punctured on the Kothagudem-Vijayawada highway. Local youths, who noticed the flat tire, stepped in to assist the driver in changing it.
Kothagudem: Huge quantity of ganja being transported in an ambulance was caught at Ramavaram area under the two-town limits in Kothagudem town during the wee hours on Sunday.
The substance was said to have been caught accidentally when one of the tyres of the ambulance got punctured on Kothagudem-Vijayawada highway. The local youths who spotted the vehicle’s tyre punctured came forward to help the vehicle driver to change the tyre.
As the vehicle registration plate shows it was from Tamil Nadu, the youths enquired about the patient in the ambulance but the driver could not answer them properly. The youths who got suspicious checked inside the vehicle and found ganja packets covered with a bed sheet. The windows were also covered with black cloth.
Then they got hold of the driver and informed the local police, who rushed to the spot, checked the vehicle and took the vehicle driver to the police station for questioning. It was said that the driver lured the youths offering cash to let him go but they dutifully called the police.
According to preliminary reports, the ganja weighs about four quintals and worth Rs 2.50 crore. Police were yet to make an official statement regarding the incident. It was suspected that ganja was being transported to Tamil Nadu from Odisha.
