Germany: Cologne’s Central Mosque allows Muslims to air Azaan on loudspeaker for the first time – WATCH

Months after Azaan row in India, the Muslim call to prayer echoed from loudspeakers of the largest mosque in Germany’s Cologne. The azaan was aired at a limited decibel from the Central Mosque in Germany’s fourth-biggest city on Friday, October 14. The move, which is being viewed as a historic event, was implemented under a special arrangement as a project agreed upon with authorities in Cologne, which has the largest population of Muslims in Germany.

Last year, the city cleared way for mosques to seek permissions for azaan, the Muslim call for prayer, for maximum five minutes between noon to 3 pm every Friday. The decibel limit will be set for each mosque according to its location. The development on October 14, which saw Cologne’s prominent mosque air the Muslim call for prayer, is not a first for Germany, according to Al Jazeera. Prior to this, however, azaan was heard only inside the mosque building.
