Medak: The Ghanpur anicut, built across the Manjeera river near Edupayala temple, began overflowing on Saturday following continuous rainfall across Sangareddy and Medak districts since Friday evening.
Interestingly, the anicut started overflowing despite no water being released from the upstream Singur reservoir and Manjeera dam, as strong local inflows filled the structure.
To meet irrigation needs in the ayacut under the project, irrigation authorities have begun releasing water through the Mahabub Nahar and Fateh Nahar canals.
The Ghanpur anicut, which has a storage capacity of 0.358 TMCft, provides irrigation for nearly 40,000 acres. Officials stated that any excess water will eventually flow into the Nizam Sagar project downstream.
