Heavy security presence at Maldives airport as Sri Lankan President set to fly to Singapore

The Velana International Airport in Maldives was heavily guarded on Wednesday night as the Sri Lankan President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, is set to depart from Maldives to Singapore soon, reports said.

The embattled President flew out of his country to Maldives early Wednesday, in a probable prelude to his resignation after months of widespread protests against the island nation’s worst-ever economic crisis.

The source, who declined to be identified given the sensitivity of the subject, said Rajapaksa could send his resignation to the speaker of Sri Lankan parliament after landing in Singapore, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, according to reports, journalists waiting near the VIP terminal of Velana International Airport were removed by security officials.

A state of emergency was imposed on Wednesday across Sri Lanka after Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the island nation.
