A video of the 81-year-old actor swearing at Trump, saying, “I’m going to say one thing. F**k Trump,” has been going viral on social media since the 97th edition of the Academy Awards was held in Los Angeles.
The video, which also shows the audience applauding the two-time Academy Award winner De Niro’s comments, is being shared as if it were recent. However, several fact-checking teams have confirmed that the now-viral video is not from the recent awards ceremony.
According to Boom, a fact-checking website, the video is actually from the 2018 edition of the Tony Awards held in New York. Formally known as the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, the Tony Awards are considered the New York theatre equivalent of the Academy Awards.
De Niro, like several other Hollywood artists, has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump. He had previously made headlines for calling the Trump ‘an idiot’ and a ‘national disaster’.
