Hyderabad: Gandhi Hospital doctors remove blade ingested by man without endoscopy

Doctors at Gandhi Hospital successfully removed a blade swallowed by a 36-year-old man without endoscopy. Using intravenous fluids and medication, the patient passed the blade safely. He was discharged in stable condition and referred for psychiatric counselling

Hyderabad: In a rare medical case, doctors at Gandhi Hospital successfully removed a blade ingested by a 36-year-old man without resorting to endoscopy.

The patient, identified as Riyuzuddin Pasha, reportedly swallowed the blade due to mental distress. He approached the hospital after 48 hours of the incident, where medical investigations confirmed the presence of the blade in his gastrointestinal tract.

Instead of opting for immediate surgical intervention, the medical team followed conservative management by administering intravenous fluids and medication to protect the stomach lining. Mental health support was also arranged for the patient.

The non-invasive treatment proved effective, as the patient managed to pass the blade without any major complication. He was later discharged in stable condition and referred for psychiatric counselling.

Doctors at Gandhi Hospital noted that while endoscopy remains the standard method for removing foreign objects, conservative approaches should not be ruled out, as they too can be effective in certain cases.
