Hyderabad: GHMC launches anti-begging drive, 221 homeless shifted

GHMC’s Urban Community Development wing launched a citywide drive and identified 221 homeless individuals at key traffic junctions. While 19 were shifted to night shelters, others were sent to their hometowns. The initiative aims to make Hyderabad a beggar-free city

Hyderabad: GHMC’s urban community development wing launched a special drive and identified 221 homeless people at traffic junctions. Some of them were shifted to night shelters, while a few more were sent back to their home towns. The drive was aimed to make Hyderabad a beggar-free city.

As part of the drive, the UCD wing officials visited traffic junctions and pavements at Basheerbagh, Nampally, Secretariat, and Begum Bazar, identifying the homeless people. The officials shifted the homeless to night shelters located at various places in the city. People who migrated to the city and were involved in begging were sent to their home towns after being counselled.

“Of them,19 people were sent to the night shelters, and the remaining were sent to their home towns after counselling. The drive will continue further in the city,” according to an official release from the GHMC UCD wing.
