Hyderabad wrestler Charan overcomes knee injury, wins gold after surgery

A few days ago, Charan returned to the hospital to share sweets with the doctors and caregivers who aided in his recovery. “I had lost hope due to the severity of my knee injury and thought my wrestling career was over. Competing with an injury seemed impossible, but the surgery and rehabilitation proved successful,” he says.

Hyderabad: A 25-year-old young wrestler, Charan from Hyderabad, who was struggling with a bad knee injury, successfully underwent a surgery and rehab at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), and managed to win a gold medal in the All India Civil Services Wrestling Championship 2024-25 held recently in Mumbai. Post-surgery, Charan also secured a job as a Telangana Excise Constable, which required him to pass rigorous physical fitness tests.

A few days ago, Charan came back to the hospital to distribute sweets to doctors and other caregivers who helped him recover. “I thought it was all over because of the serious knee injury. I had given-up because wrestling is difficult with an injury. However, the surgery and rehab worked,” Charan says.

“Charan is passionate about wrestling even as a student. However, he suffered a severe leg injury during training, which left him almost unable to walk. We diagnosed him with ligament tears and other complications. After a successful surgery, we emphasized the importance of post-surgical physiotherapy, which eventually guided him through every step of recovery,” says senior trauma specialist and joint replacement surgeon, Dr. Srinivas Kasha.

Thanks to the efforts of a team of caregivers, Charan not only regained his ability to walk but also rebuilt his strength and stamina. “This case is a perfect example of how timely surgery, proper medical care, and dedicated physiotherapy can help athletes not only recover from injuries but also excel in their sport once again,” Dr. Srinivas Kasha concluded.

Sports surgeon Dr. Rohit, anesthetist Dr. Bharathi, and Dr. Sushmith, physiotherapists Ahmed, Abhishek, and Ramesh, played a crucial role in Charan’s rehab.
