‘I’ll Think Twice Before Doing Such A Role’ Hrithik Roshan On Box Office Failure Of ‘Vikram Vedha’
Hrithik Roshan had a pretty fruitful 2019 when two of his films, Super 30 & War released and both turned out to be big box office hits.
However, the year 2022 wasn’t as good box office wise as his sole release Vikram Vedha failed despite receiving rave reviews from the critics and from those who watched it in theaters.
Now, in a new interview with Galatta Plus, Hrithik has reflected on the failure of his film and has stated that he will think twice before taking up such roles again. Moreover, the actor now wants to take up more films like War & the upcoming Fighter as he thinks his fans want him to see that way on-screen.
When asked about his 2004 film Lakshya and if he thought that was a way to go in terms of taking up roles like that, Hrithik replied, “I would’ve if I was guided that way by my audience, by the feedback that box office gave me. I’d have probably followed another direction.”
The actor then added, “You don’t even have to go that far back. Vikram Vedha released, and it didn’t fare well at the box office at all. And the feedback that I got was… Of course, there are different parts of me that are conflicted about what I should learn from this, and I think it’ll dawn on me much later, but right now I know that it is not, maybe, something that people like to see me do. Maybe I’m not allowed to do roles where I’m not catering to my fans who want to see me in a certain film, with a certain backdrop, in a certain way. If I choose to do those kinds of films, I have to treat them differently, as in myself — economically, budget-wise, cost-wise.”
He further said, “I say this now, that I will think twice before doing a role which does not cater to the fans, but of course, when I hear a story, the actor in me takes precedence, and I always say yes if I can’t say no. But there is a part of me that is aware, that maybe the way to go is films like War and Fighter, and try to find the artist in me within these spaces. I’m also hopeful that this might not be the reason, that this was not a film that was meant for a Rs 300 crore box office. I just have to recalibrate myself to that. It’s a cerebral film. It’s not a film that’s going to make you cry. It’s not got the heart of Super 30, it’s not got the sex appeal of War, the songs & dances of a Bang Bang. It’s not got this or that, it’s cerebral. It’s an intelligent film & maybe that’s the potential of a well made cerebral film. It could become a cult but maybe not a box office superhit.”
Hrithik is currently busy shooting for his next aerial action thriller Fighter alongside Deepika Padukone & Anil Kapoor. The film is directed by Siddharth Anand. It is slated for Republic Day 2024 release.
