IMD issues red alert for North Bengal, moderate rain forecast for Kolkata

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for North Bengal as high intercity rainfall is expected in the next couple of days. A heavy to very heavy rain warning has been issued for many parts of northern districts of West Bengal. There may be heavy rains in some districts of South Bengal, the weather office said on Tuesday in a bulletin.

It stated, warning of heavy to very heavy rain had been issued in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Coochbihar, Kalimpong and North Dinajpur for Tuesday and Wednesday. There may be heavy rain in South Dinajpur. Red alerts have been issued in these districts. It is feared that landslides may occur in the hilly areas due to rain.

Since Tuesday morning, incidents of landslides have been reported in many parts of the hills. Due to continuous heavy rains, National Highway No 10 connecting West Bengal with Sikkim collapsed near Pagla Jhora. As a result of the landslide, all kinds of traffic were stopped on that road. It is learned that the administration is also facing problems in making the roads work normally due to the continuous rain.

On the other hand, South Bengal, including Kolkata, is likely to receive light to moderate rains. Heavy rains are forecast in Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad on Wednesday. Met officials stated on Tuesday.
