72 players were sold for Rs 230.45 crore on a frenetic day in the IPL Auction 2024 in Dubai as all ten teams have completed their squads for next year’s competition.

Overseas pacers and uncapped Indian youngsters stole the lime-light on the busy day in Dubai as Australia’s Mitchell Starc had to break the record set by Pat Cummins in order to establish a new high value at an IPL auction in a space of a few hours. Teams like SRH and Royal Challengers Bangalore vied for Cummins’ attention before the 2016 champions eventually secured his services.

RCB, having missed out on Cummins, found themselves needing a significant overhaul in their bowling attack before the auction. They invested Rs 11.50 crores in West Indies’ Alzarri Joseph. Meanwhile, their former player Harshal Patel became the highest-earning Indian player of the day as Punjab Kings sealed a deal worth Rs 11.75 crores, triumphing over others in the process.

Apart from the fast bowlers, the IPL auction saw New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell fetching a bid of Rs 14 crores from the defending champions CSK. CSK also acquired his compatriot Rachin Ravindra for a modest price of Rs 1.8 crores. Meanwhile, Travis Head, absent from the IPL since 2017, earned a bid of Rs 6.80 crores from SRH on the back of his recent standout performances at the World Cup, including a century in the final against India.

Sameer Rizvi, an uncapped batter from Uttar Pradesh, secured a lucrative deal worth Rs 8.4 crores from CSK, beating off competition from Gujarat Titans and a last-minute attempt by Delhi Capitals to snatch the 20-year-old talent. Among other uncapped Indian players, Shahrukh Khan attracted attention, joining Titans for Rs 7.4 crores despite Punjab Kings’ efforts to reacquire him, having released him before this auction.

Kumar Kushagra, a keeper-batsman from Jharkhand, garnered interest after his blazing 67 off 37 balls in a chase of 355 against Maharashtra in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy. This triggered a competitive bidding war involving CSK, GT, and DC, with the Capitals finally securing his services for Rs 7.2 crores.
