Iran protests diplomatically to the United Kingdom over a demonstration outside its embassy in London

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned on Sunday the British Ambassador to Tehran, Simon Shercliff, to protest the “attack” on the Iranian Embassy in London perpetrated by a “violent group”.

Tehran has further protested an “outrage against the Iranian national flag” during the protest. “The British ambassador has been reminded of the obligations contained in the 1961 and 1963 Vienna Conventions” on the protection of embassies, the official IRNA news agency reports.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also strongly protested the UK’s failure to prevent this sad attack,” IRNA added.

The British ambassador has regretted the incident and assured that he will convey Iran’s protest to his government, according to the Iranian news agency.

British authorities mobilized riot troops during Saturday’s demonstration outside the Iranian Embassy. Several activists perched on the facade of the diplomatic headquarters and chanted slogans against the Iranian government and in support of women’s rights.

The semi-official Iranian news agency Mehr has reported that in the last two months the British ambassador has been summoned up to four times by the Iranian government.
