ISL 2024-25: Mohun Bagan SG outclass Hyderabad FC

Goals from Manvir Singh and Subhasish Bose in each half secured MBSG’s fourth win of the campaign.

Hyderabad: In a festive-week showdown, Mohun Bagan Super Giant delivered a scintillating performance, defeating Hyderabad FC 2-0 in their Indian Super League 2024-25 clash at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium, Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Goals from Manvir Singh and Subhasish Bose in each half secured MBSG’s fourth win of the campaign, moving up to second in the ISL standings. Hyderabad FC started energetically, with Abdul Rabeeh making an early attempt from the right, only for his shot to miss the target. A free kick soon after presented an attacking chance for Hyderabad, but in a swift transition, Jamie Maclaren raced down the pitch for MBSG, forcing Hyderabad to concede a corner.

By the 15th minute, Rabeeh’s pace continued to threaten MBSG’s defence down the right flank. He was fouled by centre-back Alberto Rodriguez, earning Hyderabad a free kick and Rodriguez a yellow card – the first of the match. Moments later, MBSG’s Manvir tried his luck with a shot to the near post but found only the side netting. Hyderabad aimed to control possession, stifling MBSG’s creative players, especially Sahal Abdul Samad and Greg Stewart.

In the 23rd minute, Sahal managed to shake Hyderabad’s defence with his footwork and took a shot from his left foot from inside the box, but his attempt missed the target. Rabeeh continued to be a headache for MBSG on the right, prompting Subhasish Bose to commit a foul just outside the 18-yard box, resulting in a yellow card for the defender.

The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute, as MBSG’s Anirudh Thapa launched a precise through ball from the defensive half to Manvir, who held his nerve to score his first goal of the season. Hyderabad, struggling to find their attacking rhythm, couldn’t get the ball to target man Allan Paulista, while Stewart and Sahal created a close chance just before halftime, only for Lalbiakhlua Jongte to deny Stewart’s shot from inside the box.

MBSG went into the break leading 1-0.In the second half, Hyderabad intensified their efforts, however, MBSG doubled their lead in the 55th minute in a set-piece situation. Stewart sent in a quality cross that found Subhasish, who headed it firmly into the bottom left corner from close range.

Despite Paulista’s attempt from the centre of the box shortly after, Hyderabad couldn’t mount a comeback. MBSG showed their league strength by controlling the game and coming close to scoring a third goal on multiple occasions, with Hyderabad managing to avoid a larger deficit. The 2-0 victory solidified MBSG’s place near the top of the table, with 13 points from six matches, while Hyderabad remain 11th with just four points.
