Justice Chandrachud’s bench extends hearing hours to finish listed cases
A Supreme Court bench headed by Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli conducted their cases till 9:10 pm to hear every single matter listed in their court on Friday.
Justice Chandrachud, who is next in line to become Chief Justice of India in November this year, during the course of the day had indicated that it would be a long night and had said, “Today we will hear every case listed on our board and I have told my family members not to wait for me today.”
The bench had assembled at 10:30 am and disposed of 72 matters listed against their bench.
The normal working hours of the court are from 10:30 am to 4 pm.
After the last matter got over, Justice Chandrachud and Hima Kohli especially thanked all their court staff for making the day successful by discharging the board for the day.
Next week commencing Monday, the Supreme Court will be shut for Dussehra vacation.
The counsel appearing in one of the cases said, “Your lordships are setting an example for younger members of the bar.”
ASG Aishwarya bhati, who also had a case listed, attended the same and appreciated the bench for giving due hearing in every case.
Interestingly, both the judges had thoroughly studied every single case placed before them.
This is not the first time Justice Chandrachud led bench sat beyond court hours, but today was the longest day when a court sat just for hearing all cases listed before them.
From the day Chief Justice of India U U Lalit took over the listing of cases in the Supreme Court, it has changed drastically.
