Karimnagar district administration gives Odia-medium textbooks to worksite school students

Textbooks of Class 1 to 7 were brought from Odisha and distributed to students on Monday as part of an initiative taken by Collector Pamela Satpathy.

Karimnagar: In order to teach migrant students in their mother tongue, the district administration has come up with an innovative idea. Now for the first time in the State, Odia-medium textbooks have been made available to migrant students studying in worksite schools. Textbooks of Class 1 to 7 were brought from Odisha and distributed to students on Monday as part of an initiative taken by Collector Pamela Satpathy.

More number of labourers from Odisha migrate to the erstwhile Karimnagar district to work in brick kiln units as well as other industries. Many labourers migrate along with their children. According to labour laws, it is the responsibility of local governments to provide education to the children of migrant labourers by establishing worksite schools.Around 500 students are currently enrolled in worksite schools across 23 centres in 10 mandals of Karimnagar district. The Collector took the initiative to support the education of migrant children from Odisha. She coordinated with education officials in Odisha and sent a formal request through the Director of School Education, Hyderabad.

While such efforts were previously confined to Andhra Pradesh, for the first time, it is being implemented in Telangana, officials said, adding that the children could now learn in their native Odia language. While English and Mathematics are being taught by local Vidya Volunteers (VVs), Odia language subjects are handled by VVs from Odisha.

These worksite schools will continue functioning until May 2025.
