Karimnagar: While most families treat Sunday as a day to relax with special meals, often featuring non-vegetarian dishes, residents of Garshakurthy village in Gangadhara mandal have chosen a different path.
Since March 2, locals have voluntarily stopped eating non-vegetarian food and consuming liquor on Sundays, citing religious beliefs tied to Lord Surya. The collective decision was made following 126 days of Srimad Bhagavatham and Mahabharat discourses held in the village, which, elders say, influenced the community to “preserve the sanctity” of the day.
Residents who once treated Sundays as a day of indulgence now abstain entirely, and the sale of meat and liquor has also been halted in the village. To ensure adherence, elders have installed banners across Garshakurthy and visited every household to explain the rationale behind the decision.
“Sunday is considered an auspicious day for Lord Surya. To protect Hindu tradition and maintain purity, we all agreed to this practice. Everyone should follow it,” village elders said.
While some residents were reportedly not following the decision initially, local leaders have renewed efforts to reinforce the agreement through social persuasion rather than enforcement.
