Kylie Minogue becomes latest star to decline offer to perform at King Charles’ Coronation concert

Australian superstar Kylie Minogue has reportedly turned down the chance to perform at King Charles’ Coronation later this year.

A source close to the 54 year old told the Mail on Sunday that she has decided to turn down the Royal event after taking into account growing Republican sentiment in Australia, becoming the latest star to turn down the performance.

Allegedly, Kylie has been advised that the gig would not go down well with her fellow Australians, with the idea of constitutional reform ramping up in the months following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September.

The source told the Mail on Sunday that she was “approached by the team” working on the Coronation show, and there was some back and forth between the two – but ultimately decided to turn it down.

The source said: “Kylie has been an honorary Brit for many, many years, and admires the Royal Family and everything that they do. But she is also a passionate Australian and has read the room in a country that could very soon become a republic.”

Kylie took part in a concert to celebrate the Queen’s 92nd birthday at the Royal Albert Hall in 2018, and paid tribute to the Monarch after her death last year.

She wrote on social media: “The occasions I had the honour of being in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II, her energy, compassion and aura had a most singular brilliance. I was, and am, in awe. My deepest condolences to family and friends. Rest in Peace.”

The team organising the Coronation concert is finding it much more difficult than they will have expected, after a number of popstars turned down invitations to perform at the show set to happen at Windsor Castle in May.

Adele and Ed Sheeran are not expected to appear, as well as the Spice Girls also reportedly not attending either – while Sir Elton John ruled himself out as he is touring.

However, a couple of big names have been confirmed for the concert, with Take That and Lionel Richie expected to perform on May 7 – the day after the Coronation service at Westminster Abbey.

Sources close to the gig have suggested they may be forced to introduce more classical and military bands to fill the gaps left by the lack of pop acts in the schedule.

The Royal Family have found themselves under intense scrutiny in recent years, including scandals surrounding Prince Andrew and his links to Jeffrey Epstein and the very public split of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the family and the ongoing controversies which followed.

OK! contacted Kylie Minogue’s representatives and Buckingham Palace for comment.
