Nirmal: A toddy trader was arrested by sleuths of Task force wing of Prohibition and Excise department for allegdly smuggling banned chloral hydrate and alprazolam here on Thursday. The sleuths seized 720 kilograms of chloral hydrate and 3 kilograms of alprazolam used for adulteration of toddy from his possession. The value of the seized substance was assessed to be Rs 43 lakh.
Nirmal town PE Inspector Laxman Rao said that Gandham Srinivas, trader from Shantinagar in the town was apprehended for smuggling the contraband substance, following a tip. Srinivas was produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.
On being interrogated, Srinivas confessed to committing the crime to make a fast buck. He admitted to procuring it from Maharashtra. Prohibition and Excise officials said that he was an habitual offender.
Task Force superintendent Pradeep Rao and staffers took part in the operation.
