Month After He Said, ‘I am 52 But Don’t Have a House Yet,’ RaGa Faces Eviction From 12 Tughlak Lane
Exact one month after Rahul Gandhi said that he is ’52 years old and yet does not own a house’, the Congress leader has been asked to vacate his government-allotted 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow. For the unversed, while addressing a Congress Plenary Session in Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh on Feb 26, Rahul had recalled the time when his family was preparing to leave their government accommodation in 1977.
The former Congress president asserted that there was a strange atmosphere in the house. “I went to mummy (Sonia Gandhi) and asked her what happened. Ma told me that we are leaving the house,” he said, adding that he never thought that it was not his house until then and asked his mother why they had to leave. Then Sonia Gandhi told him that it was not their house and belonged to the government. He then asked his mother where they would go next and she said she did not know. “52 years and I still don’t have a house. Our family house is in Allahabad and that is also not ours. I live at 12, Tughaq Lane but that is not my house,” he stated on Feb 26.
Rahul Living At 12, Tughlaq Lane Since 2005
Little did he know that he will be asked to vacate his official bungalow, which he has been occupying since 2005. Notably, Rahul’s bungalow privilege was withdrawn after the Surat Court convicted him for the 2019 ‘all thieves have Modi surname’ comment. He was awarded a two-year imprisonment but the court suspended that and gave him bail on request from his legal team – so the former MP could appeal.
The conviction triggered a massive row and on Monday evening, Rahul was asked to vacate the government bungalow allotted to him by April 22. The notice was served two days after the Congress leader was disqualified as a member of parliament after being convicted in the defamation case. Not only this, the disqualification will also prevent Rahul from contesting elections for eight years unless a higher court stays the conviction. Gandhi had represented the Amethi parliamentary seat in Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019. However, in 2019 he lost from his turf Amethi but won Kerala’s Wayanad
“Happy Memories…”
Responding to the Lok Sabha secretariat’s order, Rahul said,”Without prejudice to my rights, I will, of course, abide by the details contained in your letter.” “As an elected Member of the Lok Sabha over the last four terms, it is the mandate of the people to which I owe the happy memories of my time spent here,” the letter read.
