Mounting debts: One more farmer ends life in erstwhile Adilabad

Family members and locals reported that Rathod Gokul, a resident of Lingojiguda Thanda in Utnoor mandal, attempted to take his own life by ingesting pesticide on January 12. Initially, he was admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad but was later transferred to RIMS-Adilabad on Saturday, where he passed away.

Adilabad: A 40-year-old tenant farmer, who attempted to die by suicide a week back, died while undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here on Sunday.

Family members and locals said that Rathod Gokul from Lingojiguda Thanda in Utnoor mandal tried to kill himself by consuming some pesticide on January 12. He was initially admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad. He was later shifted to RIMS-Adilabad on Saturday, where he breathed his last.

Gokul was cultivating cotton crop in a 10-acres of land rented from a farmer. He was reportedly depressed over his inability to repay mounting debts caused by losses in farming. The quantum of loans was not yet known.

Based on a complaint received from the wife of the farmer, a case was registered. Investigations were taken up.

This is the second death by suicide of a farmer in erstwhile Adilabad in two days after another farmer died in similar manner in a bank in Nirmal on Saturday.
