Navalni’s wife demands urgent medical treatment for jailed opposition leader
Yulia Navalny, wife of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, appealed Thursday to the “humanity” of prison officials where her husband is serving his sentence and demanded that they provide him with the medical treatment he requires.
“When you return from work, surely at home parents, children are waiting for you. What goes through your heads, how do you live when you rejoice that you intentionally let a person get sick, that you do not take care of him, that you do not give him medicine?”, Navalnia has pointed out on her Instagram account.
This desperate appeal by Navalnia comes at a time when the prominent opposition figure has been unable to attend a court hearing due to his health condition, his lawyer, Kira Yarmysh, has reported on Twitter.
Yarmysh has repeatedly complained that her client is being held in an isolation cell in deplorable conditions while he is also being denied health care to alleviate the episodes of fevers, chills and coughs he has been suffering from for some time.
In addition, a group of 290 Russian doctors have this week written a letter to the country’s president, Vladimir Putin, pleading for Navalni to be allowed to receive the health care demanded by his supporters and relatives.
“The conditions of detention and the physical appearance of Alexei Navalni cause us great concern for his life and health,” reads the letter, in which the health professionals also call for the cessation of “ill-treatment” of the opposition leader.
