Osmania University’s Maneru hostel students protest substandard food

Allege that they are being served stale chicken, cooked two days ago, for breakfast; say university putting their health at risk by serving them such unhygienic food

Hyderabad: The inmates of Maneru hostel on the Osmania University (OU) campus staged a protest on Thursday alleging that they were being served substandard food.

Pushing a cart laden with two large food vessels and raising slogans against the chief warden, the students squatted on the main road in front of the Arts College and vented their ire over the administration’s failure in addressing their issues.

The angry students alleged that they were being served stale chicken, cooked two days ago, for breakfast. The university was putting their health at risk by serving them such unhygienic food, the students said.

The hostel officials were targeting girl students because they asked for additional portion of food, although they were paying inflated mess bills ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per month. There is no proper drinking water in the hostels and inadequate mess staff to prepare hygienic food, the students said.

The hostels, as per the students, were in dilapidated condition. There have been instances in the past when parts of the ceiling had collapsed at several locations, injuring students. The angry students complained that almost all taps in the washrooms were defunct.

Despite more than two months into the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor, the university administration failed to address our issues, the students said, and demanded better quality food.
