HYDERABAD: After Kalasiguda, where a girl fell into a drain and lost her life, Vidyanagar’s Padma Colony, especially the Hanuman Temple lane, was the worst affected as around 100 houses were filled with water that flowed down from all sides and washed away vehicles.

“Water accumulated up to six feet, flooding houses located on the ground floor. It was only cleared by the afternoon. The area is filled with dirt and there is no help from the authorities,” said Bitla Rajaiah Vijay Kumar, a retired RTC employee.

Guru Datta School Lane in the same colony was a scene of chaos as an electric pole and transformer broke off.

“The power supply was on at that point of time. Since it was morning, no one was in the vicinity. Else, many would have died,” said Y. Srikanth, a witness.

Other residents reported a heavy loss of property too.

“Around 22 bikes were washed away in the nala; the SNDP work had started last May and is still going on. The drain is open and there is no barricade,” said Narsing Yadav, another resident.

Gosha Pratyusha, whose house is 100 metres from the nala, said the water was coming from higher ground, due to which the flow was fast. It was also continuous, submerging cars and bikes.”

At Nampally, an old building wall near the railway station collapsed. No one was injured.

Water stagnation was also witnessed at Asifnagar, Red Hills and Mallapally, as low-lying houses were flooded and roads were inundated, as also at Ashoknagar, Gandhinagar and Barkatpura.

Many summer camps and early morning sports camps suspended activities for the day.

Kallyam Amruth Raj, a coach at a GHMC camp, said, “Rain started at 6 in the morning, which is the time our activity starts. We had to call off the activities.”
