PETA lodges complaint against ram and bull fights, Nagole cops book case

Urges police to locate the rams and bulls used in the fights and ensure that they are protected from further exploitation and suffering

Hyderabad: The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India filed a complaint against multiple people for organising and conducting ram and bull fights. Based on a complaint, the Nagole police registered a case under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 11(1) of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, according to a press release.

The PETA India, which collaborated with local activists to file the complaint, urged the police to locate the rams and bulls used in the fights and ensure that they are protected from further exploitation and suffering

“PETA India commends Nagole Station House Officer S Sudheer Krishna for his prompt action in registering the FIR and sending the message that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated,” says PETA India Cruelty Response Coordinator Sinchana Subramanyan.

“Spectacles that force animals to engage in combat are not only inherently cruel and violent but also illegal. Animals used for fighting endure immense suffering, including severe physical injuries and psychological distress. These animals are subjected to inhumane training regimens designed to amplify their aggression, endure constant physical abuse, suffer from malnutrition, and kept in poor conditions,” Saubramanyan in a press release said.

Ram fighting involves pitting two male sheep against each other in a violent and often bloody confrontation. The animals are hit and goaded into fighting until one is deemed the winner. Similarly, bulls are pitted against each other, forced into aggressive encounters, and often provoked using painful methods.

The goal is to incite violence between the animals for entertainment or gambling. These events subject the animals to significant physical and psychological harm, including fractures, puncture wounds, and severe stress, the release added.
