Hyderabad: Police sniffer dog ‘Veena,’ which served the Vizianagaram Police Department for years, died at the age of 12 on Friday, January 31. The dog was cremated with full police honours at Ayannapeta Cremation Grounds here, said Vizianagaram District Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal.
In a statement issued by the Vizianagaram Police, the SP informed that the female sniffer dog was handed over to the district Police Department in 2014. She completed her training at the Police Intelligence Department.
During her training period, Veena was handled by AR Constable Venkat Rao. But after Rao’s death in 2021, the dog’s handler N Srinivas Rao, alias Johnny, took her charge, the SP said, adding Veena gave her special services to the department till her last breath.
Veena was part of the bomb squad and dog squad of the department. “Whenever a VIP visited the district or during special events such as Republic Day and Independence Day, she actively took part in ensuring security in the district, which included searching and identifying explosives,” Jindal said.
She also wowed the audience with her gentleness during special events by giving bouquets to VIPs. The SP also said that her contribution during police search operations in agency areas to curb Maoists activity was praised by top ranking police officials.
During her last days, she received good medical care. Her vet Dr Dharma Rao confirmed that Veena died of old age.
