Poultry farmer arrested for dumping dead chickens in Akkampalli balancing reservoir

Investigations revealed that he dumped the dead birds in the link canal between the Puttamgandi reservoir and Akkampally reservoir

Nalgonda: The Nalgonda police arrested a poultry farmer, Ramavath Rayamallu from Padamati Tanda village, after finding him responsible for dumping the bird flu-infested dead chickens in Akkampalli balancing reservoir.

They produced him in a court at Devarakonda. Special police teams deployed by Superintendent of Police Sharat Chandra Pawar inspected the poultry farmers’ establishments in the vicinity of both the Akkampally Reservoir and Puttangandi Reservoir.

At the same time, the Animal Husbandry Department officials inquired about the impact of bird flu on their farms and how they have been disposing of their waste.

Police investigation revealed that the infected chickens died in large numbers during the past four days in the poultry farm of the accused farmer Rayamallu and were shifted in a vehicle away from the village and dumped in the link canal between the Puttamgandi reservoir and Akkampally reservoir late on Thursday night.

The accused, who had nearly 7,000 chickens in his farm panicked with the sudden death of the birds in large numbers and in a hurry disposed of them in the reservoir instead of disposing them as per norms with the guidance of the veterinary staff.

Both Puttangandi and Akkampalli reservoirs provide drinking water to the residents of Nalgonda and Hyderabad.

Despite being aware that the water could be contaminated, he preferred to dispose of the dead chicken the easy way.

The police appealed to the residents of all villages in Pedda Adiserla Pally and Gudipalli mandals to refrain from dumping any toxic remains or waste in the reservoirs.
