Prince Andrew was ‘always most troublesome’ royal – former Windsor employee claims

Prince Andrew was described the “most troublesome” royal by a former staff member at Windsor Castle. Evelyn Muir-Bell worked at the Queen’s Berkshire residence for 20 years between 1973 and 1995.

Now 103, Evelyn recently spoke about her experience working for the royal household and cited that the Duke of York was “always in trouble” when he was a child. The royal worker also recalled one incident in particular she had while she was manager of the Windsor Castle China Museum.

According to Birmingham Live, Evelyn remembers telling a young boy off for picking up the china she was charged with looking after. She didn’t have her glasses on and was completely unaware it was actually Prince Andrew until later.

She said: “Andrew was always in trouble because he left his towels lying around.” However she also added: “all household thought the real princess was Anne”.

Evelyn’s father-in-law also worked in the royal household as Superintendant of the Mews and even taught the Queen and Princess Margaret to ride horses. She followed in the family tradition and often came across the Queen.

Evelyn described the late monarch as having a “graciousness”, adding that there was “no arrogance”. “She was a real human, nice person,” she said.

The staff member even received a letter of thanks from the Queen in 1992 after she helped to save paintings during the Windsor Castle fire. Evelyn “stayed all day and all night” as the fire raged.
