Russia Offers To Accommodate Indian Medical Students Who Were Forced To Flee The War In Ukraine

From the time Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February this year, war-torn Ukraine has been struggling to tend to its citizens at full capacity.

This situation had a cascading effect on students from India – who were pursuing medical studies in Ukraine.

Thousands of them were stranded with their future hanging on the cliff when Russia attacked Ukraine. Many were evacuated from Ukraine to India.

Owing to their safety, they had to leave their curriculum mid-way and return to their homeland.

Students can continue course in Russia

Now, Russia has opened a new prospect for these students.

“Indian students who left Ukraine can continue their education in Russia as the medical syllabus is almost the same (as Ukraine), “Russian Consul General Oleg Avdeev said in Chennai.

“They know the language of the people, as, in Ukraine, most of them speak Russian. They’re most welcome in Russia,” he added.

The envoy also highlighted the upward trend of international students travelling to Russia for studies.

“As far as students are concerned, students keep going to Russia for studies. It is an upward trend. More and more students are applying for scholarships in Russia,” the Russian diplomat said.

Notably, many Indian students travel to Ukraine and Russia to pursue medicine and other specialised courses.

‘Russian oil exports have increased’

The official was also asked about Russian oil exports.

“Since the beginning of this year, the exports in Russian oil have increased from 2 to 22 pc. It is a very dramatic increase and now Russia has displaced Iraq and Saudi Arabia as leading producers of oil,” Oleg Avdeev responded.

He also appreciated Indian EAM’s remarks on Russian oil imports, which stated, “Indian government is a responsible govt and it has to look after the interests of Indian consumers.”

Deep ties between India and Russia

On Tuesday, the External Affairs Minister of India, S. Jaishankar, reiterated the deep ties between India and Russia.

“India’s relationship with Russia has worked to its advantage, and New Delhi would like to keep that going,” he had said.
