See Harrison Ford’s Return To What He Does Best In Indiana Jones First Look

Ending years of rumors and delays, Harrison Ford is returning as Indiana Jones. The first look at the latest movie comes from Empire Magazine which has placed the Hollywood Icon front and center on the cover of their January 2023 issue. The greatest action hero of all time, sorry Vin Diesel, will finally be making a grand return to the silver screen next year.

After the last film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, seemingly ended with Shia LeBeouf taking over as the future lead while Indy rode into the sunset with Marion Ravenwood, fans thought they would never see Ford again. When the film disappointed fans and critics alike upon release, Harrison Ford seemingly promised to never appear as Indiana Jones again. Of course, the famous Hollywood curmudgeon once said the same thing about his other legendary character, and fans got to see Han Solo aboard the Millennium Falcon one last time.

While his Star Wars character has become a cinematic archetype, Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones is arguably even more iconic than the space-faring smuggler. With his fedora and trademark leather whip, Indiana Jones’ influence on pulp action movies has ensured constant references and callbacks to the original LucasFilm trilogy. Just think of how often a character in any show or movie will don the hat, jacket, and whip as a reference when they’re going into a jungle.

The next film, currently untitled, will be the first time Harrison Ford has put on an Indiana Jones trademark outfit in 14 years. The gap between The Last Crusade and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was nearly 20 years, showing that the star’s reluctance to consistently appear as Indy has spanned entire generations. It is no surprise that the upcoming fifth movie is again, according to Ford, the last time he will wear the fedora.

Remaining top-secret, not much is known about the plot for the upcoming film. Directing Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones this time around will be James Mangold, whose past directing credits include Ford v. FerrariLogan, and 3:10 to YumaSteven Spielberg, the only other man to direct an Indiana Jones film, passed the opportunity onto Mangold though he remains on board as a producer.

Joining Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones once again are new actors to the franchise. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who coincidentally voiced the droid L3-37 in SoloA Star Wars Story, Mads Mikkelsen, and Antonio Banderas have been confirmed to appear in the upcoming film. What their roles will be, or even if they will be friends or foes to the world-famous archeologist remains a mystery.

About the only piece of information regarding the upcoming movie that can be safely assumed is Harrison Ford will not stick Indiana Jones into a fridge to survive a nuclear explosion. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in addition to providing one of the most absurd sequences ever filmed, moved Indiana out of World War 2 and into the Cold War era, with Russians replacing the Nazis of the first trilogy. The upcoming untitled film promises to again move Ford’s character into a new era, perhaps the Kennedy years of the 60s or even the period of the Vietnam War.
