Shubman Gill breaks Virat Kohli’s 11-year-old record, joins Babar Azam with a memorable ton in 3rd ODI against NZ

Shubman Gill continued his purple patch and scored his 2nd century of the ongoing series against New Zealand during the 3rd ODI in Indore on Tuesday (January 24). The opening batsman smashed a brilliant 112 off just 78 balls and batted with a strike-rate of 143.59. He hit 13 boundaries and 5 sixes in his century.

With a score of 112, Gill breached an elite record owned by Virat Kohli. He went past his former skipper and now owns the record for scoring the most runs in a three-match series by an Indian batsman. Kohli had scored 357 runs in the 2012 Asia Cup. India only played 3 matches in the continental tournament before crashing out.

Overall, the list of batsmen with the most runs in a three-match is now jointly owned by Gill and Babar Azam. Babar had scored 360 runs in the three-match ODI series against West Indies in 2016. He had created history and smashed back-to-back centuries in the series.

Talking of Gill, the youngster had kicked off the series against NZ with a historic double-century. He remained unbeaten on 40 in the 2nd ODI as India chased down the target of 109 with ease. In the 3rd ODI, Gill smashed 112 quickly.

He showed the intent to score right from the start and completed the half-century in 33 balls. He breached the three-figure mark in 72 balls. He was foxed by a short delivery outside the off stump by Blair Ticker and ended up giving a simple catch to Devon Conway.

Not just Gill, Rohit Sharma also breached the three-figure mark and smashed the 30th century of his ODI career. The India captain scored 101 off just 85 balls. Rohit hadn’t scored a century since January 2020 and ended his three-year drought for the big score. The senior batsman completed his century on the 83rd ball he faced. India have breached the 250-run mark in 32 overs.
