Smriti Irani is ‘Cylinder Cinderella’ who is silent on rising prices of LPG: Alka Lamba
Questioning the silence of union minister Smriti Irani on the rising prices of domestic LPG cylinders making it out of bounds for the common people, AICC spokesperson Alka Lamba dubbing Smiriti Irani as “Cylinder Cinderella” asked her when she will carry the cylinder on head like a crown to protest against its rising prices as during UPA regime she used to protest with cylinder on her head when prices were just Rs 400-500 while now prices have crossed Rs 1100 in Himachal Pradesh.

“We have named Smriti Irani as Cylinder Cindrella as when the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led UPA government was in power at that Smriti Irani used to hold protest demonstrations by carrying LPG cylinder on slight increase in LPG but now she seems to be ignorant about the LPG price and is maintaining a silence,” Alka Lamba said.
She said in 2014, the LPG cylinder under UPA regime was being provided to people at Rs 410 but now under BJP rule it is being provided at Rs 1100.
She said that Smriti Irani on June 15, 2020 had claimed that Ujjawala scheme is benefitting 1.36 lakh women in Himachal Pradesh while truth is that women have stopped use of LPG stove. She said that above statement of Smriti Irani has only proved to be a jumla and now she is coming to Himachal Pradesh once again on Saturday to mislead the people ahead of assembly polls.
Alka Lamba said that in 2018-19 in Himachal Pradesh 83,177 LP cylinders were refilled in the state under Ujjawala scheme and this number dropped to 23048 in 2019-2020 and dropped further to 9415 in 2021-22.
She said that main demand of women in Himachal Pradesh is that prices of LPG gas should be reduced and subsidy should be continued again. She said that under Ujjawala scheme subsidy of Rs 37209 crore was given in 2019 and this subsidy was reduced to Rs 242 crore in 2022.
She said that Smriti Irani is coming to Rampur on Saturday where hundreds of women will return empty LPG cylinders to her as these are lying unused as people are not being able to refill them due to steep increase in prices. “They will demand that either the gas rates should be reduced or the government should take them back,” she added.
She said that Congress party has promised to provide LPG cylinder at the price of Rs 500 in Gujarat whereas in Himachal Pradesh party will deposit Rs 1500 monthly in the accounts of women so they can afford the LPG cylinders.
