‘Subah ka bhoola agar sham ko…’: Delhi Congress as leaders return after joining AAP

The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Anil Chaudhary said that all is forgiven after two newly elected Congress councillors and party leader Ali Mehdi switched back to the grand old party just hours after joining the Aam Aadmi Party.

Anil Chaudhary along with all nine elected councillors and other leaders of the Delhi Congress conducted a press conference on Saturday. They were joined by the Vice President of DPCC, Ali Mehdi.

Anil Chaudhary, while accepting the crushing defeat of the Congress in the municipal elections, said, “We accept the mandate of the people. The BJP since 2014 has been working to murder democracy and has been attacking electoral politics and the AAP is trying to follow the same politics. The AAP is trying to lure people in the name of development and poach our councillors.”

Talking about the councilors switching back to the Congress, Anil Chaudhary said, “Subeh ka bhoola shaam ko laut aaye toh usse bhula nahi kehte (If someone makes a mistake, and then regrets and apologises for it, he/she should be forgiven)”.

“Ali Mehdi has been, is, and will be part of the Congress family,” Anil Chaudhary asserted on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ali Mehdi said that he “got emotional and made a mistake”. He said the move to join the AAP was purely for developmental purposes of his constituency, Mustafabad, located in North-East Delhi.

“I made a big mistake yesterday. In my area of Mustafabad almost all our candidates won, the public of Mustafabad elected us for development. Some former colleagues from Congress, who are in AAP now, reached out to me and tried to lure me. AAP promised me development in my area and promised double funds for development. I got emotional and in that moment made a mistake,” said Mehdi.

Ali Mehdi had joined the AAP with two newly elected councillors of MCD, Sabila Begum and Nazia Khatoon. While Sabila Begum won from ward number 243, Mustafabad, Nazia Khatoon won from ward number 245, and Brij Puri.

Soon after Mehdi’s defection, senior Congress had heavily criticised the move. After the criticism from his former colleagues in Congress and protests in Mastafaba, Mehdi decided to return to Congress.
