School Education director EV Narasimha Reddy issued proceedings extending the exemption period for teaching and learning Telugu as a compulsory subject for certain classes.
Hyderabad: In a major relief to non-Telugu speaking students, the School Education department exempted them from studying Telugu as a compulsory subject.
This is applicable to Classes IX and X students in the current academic year and Class X students in the next academic year 2025-26.

However, as per the proceedings, all schools affiliated to State board, CBSE, ICSE, IB or other boards must implement the compulsory Telugu subject for Classes I to IX from the academic year 2025-26.
Earlier, as the classes could not be conducted due to COVID-19 pandemic, the State government exempted schools from implementing Telugu as a mandatory subject for students of Classes IX and X for two academic years, concluding with 2023-24.
It may be noted here that the State government, to protect and preserve Telugu language and literature, made Telugu teaching and learning mandatory in all schools irrespective of their affiliation.
In fact, the Telangana Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools Act 2018 was also brought and implementation began in a phased manner, commencing 2018-19.
