That’s the pleasing aspect when you put together a team performance, because that’s what’s been lacking for us this year, says Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori
HYDERABAD: Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori said that every bowler contributed to the team’s win against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL league match at Chepauk in Chennai on Friday night.
“That’s the pleasing aspect when you put together a team performance, because that’s what’s been lacking for us this year. We haven’t been able to put together all three facets,” Vettori said in the post-match briefing.
“The initial plan was around left-right-hand combinations, and that’s in a way to counter Noor and Jadu and how good they are through those middle stages. That’s why Kamindu came in today, because of his ability to play spin, his left-handedness,” he explained.
On Kamindu Mendis’ brilliant catch to send back the dangerous Dewald Brevis, Vettori said it was just instinct. “It’s an innate ability to be able to move, to see the ball and time you’re diving. So it’s probably one of those catches that even a brilliant fielder only has one or two in their career,” he said
“So special moment from the catch, but more importantly for us, the moment in the game where Brevis was starting to take control, putting a lot of pressure back on us. And if he’d stayed in, probably the score would have gotten away from us and it would have been a difficult chase,” Vettori said.
The SRH head coach said the message to the players was to simply understand and assess the conditions. “So there’s certainly no instruction from myself or the batting coach, to be aggressive, to just take the game on recklessly. And, that’s the same with Abhi and Travis,” he said.
“But we know they’re aggressive players, and we know when they dominate that power play, then more often than not, it sets us up for a victory. So we want to encourage that. We want them to still understand what conditions provide, but overall we just have to assess and adapt a bit better,” Vettori said.
