Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cybercrime police nabbed two people including a woman from Andhra Pradesh on charges of cheating a man from the city in a matrimony fraud on Saturday.
The arrested persons are Tamma Hema Mani alias Preeti Reddy (37) and Konda Reddy (42), both residents of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. Hema Mani, who targeted single men, introduced herself with a fake name ‘Preeti Reddy’, claiming to be a cardiologist and a divorcee.
Police said the 34-year-old complainant and the suspect expressed mutual interest and continued their friendship on social media. The fraudster eventually proposed marriage, and the complainant accepted the proposal.
“After a few days, the fraudster requested money from him, citing the need for funds to treat a patient. However, she did not repay the amount. Later, she contacted him again, claiming that her mother had passed away and that she urgently needed more money. Trusting her, he transferred a total of Rs 4.9 lakh in multiple transactions,” said a cybercrime official.
Konda Reddy, who supported Hema Mani in the fraud was also arrested.
