Two teen brothers charged over mass shooting at 16th birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama

Two brothers have been charged with murder in connection with the shooting at a 16th birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama that killed four people and injured 32.

Ty Reik McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16, were arrested on Tuesday night and have each been charged with four counts of reckless murder in connection with Saturday night’s shooting, police said.

The attack took place at the Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio where a birthday party was being held for teenager Lexi Dowdell.

Her brother Phil Dowdell, 18, was among the four killed, along with KeKe Smith, 17, Siah Collins, 19, and Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, 23.

Phil Dowdell was a star wide receiver who had plans to play college football at Jacksonville State University. Smith was a talented athlete who became a team manager after she was sidelined by a knee injury.

Collins was a 2020 Opelika High School graduate who planned to start college in autum after taking a year off to try his hand at music. Holston was a 2018 Dadeville High graduate and former athlete at the school.

Mike Segrest, district attorney for Tallapoosa County, said Alabama would charge the two suspects as adults, and would request they remain in custody at a bond hearing set to be held within 72 hours.

He said more charges were likely on top of the reckless murder counts, adding: “We’ve still got four in critical condition (and more wounded), there will be pending charges coming for all of those.

“There were so many kids in this venue, and what they saw… they’re victims of this, their families are victims of this. It’s a traumatic thing for them, and they need help.

“It was Lexi Dowdell’s 16th birthday party. There’s an uncut cake and unburned 16 candles that never got lit. On her 16th birthday, she knelt by her brother as he took his last breath. That’s what we’re dealing with here.

“I know some of these victims personally, some of these kids are kids of friends of mine in the community… do not mess with our kids.”
