Uddhav Thackeray betrayed BJP for power: Amit Shah hits out at former Maharashtra CM

Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah on Monday, during a meeting with party MPs, MLAs, MLCs and corporators in Mumbai launched a scathing attack on former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray. Amit Shah claimed that BJP never promised Maharashtra CM’s post to Shiv Sena ahead of 2019 assembly polls in the state and Uddhav Thackeray ‘betrayed the party for power’. The Union HM further said that ‘BJP does not do its politics in closed rooms and practices it openly.’

According to sources, Shah, during the meeting said that Uddhav Thackeray had not only ‘deceived the BJP’ but also the ‘ideology’ and had ‘insulted the mandate of people of the state.’

Notably, BJP and Shiv Sena fought the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections as allies but later split up over differences on the CM post. Shiv Sena then joined hands with Congress and NCP and formed a government in the state with Uddhav Thackeray as the CM. The Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP alliance, however, was ousted from power earlier this year in June after a faction of Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde staged a rebellion and joined hands with the BJP.

The Shinde-led faction of Shiv Sena formed a government in the state with the support of the BJP. Eknath Shinde was sworn in as the chief minister of Maharashtra while BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis was appointed as his deputy.

Notably, the said meeting comes ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The BJP is aiming to take back control of the Mumbai civic body polls from the Shiv Sena, which ruled the civic body till an administrator was appointed earlier this year due to a delay in holding the elections.

This was also Amit Shah’s first visit to Maharashtra after the formation of the Eknath Shinde government. The meeting took place at the residence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
