Watch: David Warner injures himself while wildly celebrating 200 vs South Africa, gets retired hurt

Australia are currently taking on South Africa in the second Test match of the three-match series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, in what is a traditional Boxing Day Test Match. The Australians have already decimated South Africa in the first Test, and are dominating them in the second match as well, especially after a special batting performance by veteran opener David Warner, who is having a memorable Boxing Day Test Match.

David Warner, who was coming into the Test Match amidst some pretty harsh criticism, with some even questioning his place in the side after a dismal run of form in the longest format of the game in 2022. He answered his critics sharply in style as he smashed the Proteas bowlers all over the park and registered a double century. He hit 200 from 256 balls in an innings studded with 16 fours and 2 sixes.

After reaching his double century, David Warner was seemingly emotional as he jumped in joy, and went down on his knees to scream in celebration. This proved to be costly for the veteran left-hander as he clutched the back of his thighs and immediately called for medical help. He was already suffering from cramps as he batted throughout the innings, and the celebrations aggravated his pain. He was then carried out of the field by his teammates as he was shedding a tear, as he was declared retired hurt.

David Warner was playing his 100th Test match, and he created history as he became only the second batter in history to score a 200 on his 100th Test, after former England skipper Joe Root’s feat. In fact, with his century he became the second Australian after Ricky Ponting and the 10th batsman overall to achieve the three-figure mark in his 100th Test.

At the end of Day 2, Australia are in a comfortable position at 386/3 and have already secured a lead of 197 runs.
