Watch: Young pitch invader hugs Rohit Sharma in 2nd ODI, India captain asks security to not take action

Rohit Sharma’s heart-warming gesture to a young fan went viral on social media when a boy invaded the Raipur pitch to hug the Indian captain, and he asked security not to take action against the child.

The incident took place during the 10th over of India’s innings when they were cruising in the 109-run chase in the second ODI against New Zealand. On numerous occasions, fans have breached security to enter the pitch and interact with their heroes; for example, a fan recently invaded the pitch to touch Virat Kohli’s feet.

Similarly, a young boy from Raipur slipped past the security guards and ran onto the field to hug the Indian captain. As soon as the boy hugged Rohit, security closed in on him and separated him from the Indian captain, who was seen pleading with the personnel not to take any action against the boy.

Talking about the 2nd ODI, India’s relentless pace attack ripped through a shaky New Zealand batting lineup as the hosts cruised to an eight-wicket victory in the second One-Day International on Saturday, sealing the three-match series.

The Mohammed Shami-led attack bowled out New Zealand for a meagre 108 before India chased down the runs in 20.1 overs. Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 40 off 53 deliveries, while Rohit Sharma hit a sublime 50 off 51 balls.

The victory was emphatic, but the sea of fans who flocked to the remote Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium for Raipur’s first international game were left wanting more due to the early finish.
