Apple had launched the last iPhone SE in 2022. Hence, the anticipation for the fourth-generation iPhone SE has been high
Hyderabad: Apple is set to launch its fourth-generation iPhone SE around April. The last iPhone SE was released in 2022. Hence, the anticipation for this new one has been high. Ever since news of the upcoming launch surfaced, leaks and rumours have been pouring in.
The Name
While it was expected that the new device will be called iPhone SE 4, as it was with its predecessors, a rumour claimed that it will be named iPhone 16E.
The iPhone SE is a series of low cost smartphones, part of iPhone family developed by Apple. The other iPhones in SE series were iPhone SE (first generation) released in 2016; iPhone SE (second generation) released in 2020; and iPhone SE (third generation) released in 2022.
OLED Panel
For this new iPhone SE, Apple has switched to OLED display panels, instead of the cheaper LCD technology, which the company used for the older versions of SE series. So, Apple will no longer be making any smartphone using LCD panels. In other words, the last iPhone SE’s LCD screen will become the last-of-its-kind.
China’s BOE and Korea’s LG are supplying OLED displays for the next iPhone SE to Apple.
Globally, Samsung provides 50% of the OLED panels used in iPhones, while LG holds a 30% share, and BOE accounts for the remaining 20%.
According to a UK-based market researcher Omdia, OLEDs will overtake LCDs by number of panels shipped for smartphones this year.
Frame
iPhone SE 4 looks similar to iPhone 16. However, SE 4 has a sharper frame, while iPhone 16 is rounder around the edges. The SE 4 is said to be reusing iPhone 14 chassis.
Camera
The iPhone SE will have a single camera sensor on the back alongside a cutout for the microphone and the LED flash. The sides are flat, with the volume buttons and mute switch on the left-hand side, and a physical SIM tray.
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to reuse the iPhone 14’s 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display (60Hz) with the notch cutout housing the 12MP front-facing camera and Face ID sensors for the first time. However, Apple has ditched the home button.
RAM
The budget iPhone will also get an updated Apple A18 chip with 8GB RAM, which will allow it to run with Apple intelligence capabilities. There will be a 48MP camera on the back, a USB-C port in place of the lightning connector.
Notch technology
The leaked images of 2025’s iPhone SE showed that Apple will introduce the notch to its mid-range smartphone for the first time. The iconic notch technology debuted on the iPhone X.
Since the smartphone screen is one of the most expensive components, the notch technology helps keep the screen cost lower, which will have a significant impact on the overall manufacturing cost of the iPhone SE models.
Further, the notch technology is regarded as only belonging to the iPhone. This will ensure that iPhone SE is seen as an iPhone.
Price
The device will cost around USD 500 and likely to come in white and black case design. Considering the bigger screen, the Face ID, the 8GB of RAM and A18 chipset, the 48 MP main camera, this fourth-generation iPhone SE expects to be a good deal.
