Khammam: In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a woman from Kusumanchi mandal in Khammam district ended up tying a rakhi to her brother’s body during his funeral, just a day before Raksha Bandhan.
Pandiri Appi Reddy (24), an earthmover driver from Kistapuram village, succumbed to dengue fever on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Khammam. He had been diagnosed just days earlier.
Before his condition worsened, Appi Reddy had called his sister, Sankapalli Jyothi, who lives in Guruvaigudem, and invited her to visit him for Rakhi. He had assured her he would recover in time to celebrate the festival together.
But tragically, he passed away a day before the celebration.
On Thursday, during his funeral procession, a grieving Jyothi tied the rakhi she had brought for him onto his lifeless wrist—fulfilling a sacred sibling ritual in the most heartbreaking way. His cousins, P. Sowjanya, Krishnaveni, Hemalatha, and Bhavani, also tied rakhis to him during the ceremony.
The emotionally charged moment left the entire village in tears.
