Italy’s pick for new Leonardo CEO is unlawful, opposition party says

Italy’s Antitrust agency should intervene against the appointment of former energy and environment minister Roberto Cingolani as CEO of defence group Leonardo, the leader of a green opposition party said on Thursday. As part of a raft of nominations at state-controlled firms, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration on Wednesday picked Cingolani to lead Leonardo, replacing former banker Alessandro Profumo. Opposition lawmaker and Green party leader Angelo Bonelli said the appointment violates a conflict-of-interest law that prevents ministers from taking on jobs at companies in sectors they previously regulated in the 12 months after leaving office. “Leonardo operates also in the environmental sector and Cingolani was ecological transition minister in the previous government led by Mario Draghi until October 2022,” Bonelli…

Following a request by French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, the constitutional council has been tasked with judging whether Macron’s pension reform is allowed under France’s constitution. In Paris, as thousands marched along the designated protest route, some protesters holding lit flares veered off to the…

China’s ethnic-cultural cleansing continues as schools in Inner Mongolia told to switch to Mandarin

Officials in Inner Mongolia, a region in northern China, have ordered all schools to switch to Mandarin-medium teaching and eliminate Mongolian language classes by September, reported Radio Free Asia (RFA). The action is a continuation of a policy that in August 2020 caused significant unrest across the region when the regional education bureau ordered all schools to implement “teaching in our national Mandarin language” and to guarantee that high-school students are proficient in the language, even if they speak Mongolian at home. Regional officials stated at a meeting in late March that schools must “build Chinese national consciousness and community, and deepen education in national unity,” according to RFA. Some rights advocates have cautioned that “national unity” initiatives have prompted forced intermarriage…

Joe Biden talks of his English roots in Nottingham as he explores Irish ancestry

Joe Biden made a rare acknowledgement of his English roots on Wednesday in an apparent attempt to show he had not written out his ties to the UK. Giving a speech at Ulster University on his whistle-stop tour of Belfast before heading to a three-day trip south of the border where he will explore his Irish heritage, the president joked that British friends had told him he was really English. Mr Biden said that while vice-president, he had lived next door to the UK ambassador whom he did not name. He said that during the ambassador’s last trip before he came back to Washington to finish his term he brought back a present from the UK and suggested the president was English. “He brought back…

Macron insists France won’t be US ‘vassal’ on Taiwan amid ‘status quo’ controversy

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday stood by his controversial comments on Taiwan, saying that being a US ally did not mean being a “vassal”. Macron — wrapping up a state visit to the Netherlands during which he has also faced protests over pension reforms — said France still backed the “status quo” on Taiwan. But the French president appeared to stick by remarks in an interview at the weekend, in which he said Europe should not be a “follower” of either Washington or Beijing or get caught up in any escalation. “Being an ally does not mean being a vassal… doesn’t mean that we don’t have the right to think for ourselves,” Macron told a press conference in Amsterdam with Dutch Prime Minister Mark…
