Japan has no land to bury dead chickens amid worst-ever bird flu outbreak

The worst-ever bird flu outbreak in Japan has destroyed its poultry herds, sending egg costs skyrocketing. There is no longer enough area to bury dead chickens.  This season, more than 17 million birds have been killed across the country. To avoid spreading the virus or compromising water systems, remains must be appropriately disposed of. According to NHK, local administrations and farmers say there is a scarcity of adequate land to bury them. The situation of Japan emphasises the need for countries to rethink how they deal with bird flu, especially when record-breaking death tolls from the virus have become the norm around the world. While most outbreaks have occurred in Europe, the United States, and Asia, the illness has recently…

Has Emmanuel Macron renounced his generous presidential pension?

Thursday marked the 11th day of strikes across France against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform plan. The protests come amid a deadlock in discussions between unions and the government. But Macron’s supporters were quick to defend the French leader. Recently, Stephane Vojetta, an MP for French citizens living abroad and part of Macron’s Renaissance party, tweeted a graphic published in the business magazine Capital.  The illustration compares the pensions of the past three French presidents: Emmanuel Macron, François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. It explains Nicolas Sarkozy who was head of state between 2007 and 2012 receives €11,400 net per month. Francois Hollande, president between 2012 and 2017 receives €15,000 per month after tax. But the magazine explains Emmanuel Macron has in…

Germany, France join EU Commission’s infringement proceedings against Hungary over anti-LGBT law

According to a German government official, Germany and France have joined the EU Commission’s infringement procedures against Hungary over its anti-LGBT bill. In mid-2022, the European Commission referred Hungary to the EU Court of Justice over a rule prohibiting the use of materials in schools that promote homosexuality and gender transition. According to the commission, the measure contradicts EU internal market regulations, fundamental human rights, and EU values. Touted as protecting children by the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who presents himself as a defender of traditional family Catholic values, the law was criticised by human rights groups and international watchdogs as discriminating against LGBT people and labelled a “disgrace” by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen…

The ‘leaked war plans’ could prove embarrassing for the US – but useful for Russia

Top Secret documents detailing the state of readiness of Ukraine’s forces as well as detailed planning information around equipment inflow, weather, ammunition expenditure, training and much more have been circulating on Telegram and Twitter. The documents titled “Russia / Ukraine | Status of the Conflict as of 1 Mar” appears to be a daily briefing document with a classification higher than top secret, giving clues to the sources of the information within it, and a caveat of “NOFORN,” which means No Foreign Dissemination, so for US eyes only. Some of the pages have lesser classifications and are designed for release to Ukraine. The detail contained could be useful to the Russians, as there are two things related to any Ukrainian counteroffensive that…

Russia warns West: we may work around the Black Sea grain deal

Russia warned the West on Friday that unless obstacles to its exports of grain and fertilisers were removed, then Ukraine would have to export grain over land and Moscow would work outside the UN-brokered landmark grain export deal. The Black Sea grain deal is an attempt by the United Nations to ease a food crisis that predated the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but was made worse by the most deadly war in Europe since World War Two. The deal, first signed by Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN in July last year and twice extended, allows for the export of food and fertiliser, including ammonia from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, Yuzhny/Pivdennyi. While the West has not placed…

What’s behind the Israeli Ramadan raids on Al-Aqsa mosque?

It’s become something of a grim, springtime tradition in the Holy Land. Israeli police fire tear gas and rubber bullets at Palestinians stockpiling rocks and fireworks inside one of the most bitterly disputed holy sites on Earth. The violence ripples across Israel and the occupied West Bank, and militants from as far away as Gaza and Lebanon respond with rockets. Similar tensions in 2021 boiled over into an 11-day Gaza war. Violence at the holy site in 2000 ignited a five-year Palestinian uprising and a fierce Israeli military crackdown across the occupied territories. One of the first major outbreaks of Jewish-Arab violence occurred in Jerusalem’s Old City in the spring of 1920, in what became known as the Nebi Musa riots. What is it about…

IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva. Washington: The IMF chief on Thursday said that the world economy is expected to grow at less than 3 per cent this year, with India and China expected to account for half of global growth in 2023. International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Kristalina Georgieva warned that a sharp slowdown in the world economy last year following the raging pandemic and Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine would continue this year. The period of slower economic activity will be prolonged, with the next five years witnessing less than 3 per cent growth, our lowest medium-term growth forecast since 1990, and well below the average of 3.8 per cent from the past two decades,” she said.
