Biden plots 25pc tax on billionaires

US President Joe Biden is proposing a controversial tax grab from billionaires, rich investors and corporations in a budget request to Congress. Mr Biden’s request, expected to be released on Thursday, calls for a 25pc minimum tax on billionaires and a doubling of the capital gains tax rate for investment from 20pc to 39.6pc.  The US President also plans to raise income levies on corporations and wealthy Americans, according to Bloomberg.  While the proposal will likely have widespread public support, it is unlikely to survive Congress, with the Republicans controlling the lower chamber.   However, it gives an insight into the Democrats’ approach ahead of negotiations over the debt ceiling and Mr Biden’s expected re-election campaign.  The President has previously failed to push through…

‘I want Putin to die’: Shock and anger after dozens of Russian missiles hit Kyiv

I met Larysa standing on broken glass outside her Kyiv apartment block trying to convince two council workmen to come up to her flat and mend her shattered windows. Only hours earlier she had been shaken to the core by a huge explosion in the residential complex car park three floors beneath her. She invited us inside saying she had been terrified by the blast. Larysa was clearly in shock and very teary. As we walked towards the entrance to her block I looked up; dozens and dozens of windows were shattered for floor after floor of the building. Inside, the workmen started clearing up while we chatted. “There was an explosion, and of course, I jumped immediately,” she told…

It…

Georgia withdraws ‘foreign agents’ bill after days of protests

An EU delegation welcomed the decision to drop the controversial law and encouraged Georgia to resume reforms. Georgia’s governing party announced it is withdrawing a draft law from parliament criticised as potentially stifling media freedom and civil society after days of protests against it in the capital. The Georgian Dream party said in a statement on Thursday it would “unconditionally withdraw the bill we supported without any reservations”. It cited the need to reduce “confrontation” in society. The bill would have required Georgian organisations receiving more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad to register as “foreign agents” or face fines. Georgian Dream previously said the law was necessary to unmask critics of the Georgian Orthodox Church, one of the country’s…
