Egypt sentences 38 people to life in prison over 2019 protests

An Egyptian court on Sunday handed down life prison sentences to 38 people, including a self-exiled businessman whose social media posts helped to spark anti-government protests. Public protests are rare in Egypt where President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has overseen a wide-ranging crackdown on dissent. But a series of video and other social media posts by Egyptian businessman Mohamed Ali, who now lives in Spain, led to scattered street demonstrations in September 2019 over allegations of corruption and other issues. Twenty-three of those who got life terms were tried in absentia, including Ali, according to an Egyptian criminal court handling terrorism-related cases. The court also sentenced 44 others including children to terms ranging from five to 15 years in prison over the same charges. Twenty-one…

Israelis rally in three cities against PM Netanyahu’s legal reforms

Tens of thousands of Israelis demonstrated in three major cities on Saturday against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s judicial reform plans, with organisers accusing him of undermining democratic rule weeks after his reelection. Bestriding a religious-nationalist coalition with a solid parliamentary majority, Netanyahu, now in his sixth term, wants to rein in the Supreme Court in what he has described as a restoration of the balance of the three branches of government. Critics say the proposed reforms would cripple judicial independence, foster corruption, set back minority rights and deprive Israel’s courts system of credibility that helps fend off war-crimes allegations abroad. Among those opposed are the Supreme Court chief justice and the country’s attorney-general. After President Isaac Herzog appealed to polarised…

Putin publicly snubs Wagner chief as Kremlin engulfed in volatile power struggle

Vladimir Putin publicly snubbed Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, following Russia’s apparent victory in Soledar. In a message congratulating Russia’s military for the win, President Putin did not mention Wagner forces once. This sparked fury from officials inside the paramilitary group, with Mr Prigozhin later accusing the military of “constantly trying to steal Wagner’s victory”. In a video on Saturday, the Wagner mercenary chief said that his forces were “the most experienced army that exists in the world today” in a subtle threat to the defence ministry. Retired Air Vice-Marshal Sean Bell told Sky News that the power struggle inside the Kremlin was growing. He said: “The Wagner Group, which led the battle here, claimed victory a…

Blow for Sunak as poll shows uphill battle he faces with voters before next election

Rishi Sunak is facing an uphill battle to reverse Labour‘s massive lead in the polls with two thirds of voters (65 percent) saying they have made up their minds and will not change ahead of the next election expected sometime in 2024. Just one in five voters (21 percent) are willing to change their minds, the exact same proportion as Labour’s current lead in the tracker poll. After the Conservatives went through 2022 with three Prime Ministers with chaos over Boris Johnson and Partygate as well as Liz Truss’s disastrous mini budget, Mr Sunak appears to be struggling to persuade voters that the Conservatives should be given another go. While so-called swing voters always make a small proportion of the electoriate, the 21 percent…
