Germany sends vaccines to China as concern over massive Covid surge grows

China is witnessing a massive spike in cases and could face more than a million Covid deaths next year, days after dismantling its zero Covid policy. The situation is concerning as China’s Covid vaccines haven’t been updated to target the highly infectious Omicron variants that is driving the case load across several countries, including Japan and Brazil.  On Wednesday, Germany dispatched a batch of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine to China, where it will be administered to Germans who live in the country. The Chinese government formally informed Berlin in a diplomatic note that German citizens can be inoculated with the vaccine, which otherwise isn’t cleared for use in China, AP reported.  After widespread protests, the country of 1.4 billion people this month began dismantling its…

A federal judge told former President Donald Trump’s legal team to lay off filing a “frivolous” and pointless lawsuits meant to slow down proceedings against the Trump Organization. US District Judge Donald Middlebrooks on Wednesday denied a Trump team request for an injunction in the longrunning probe into his business. Asia’s ‘El Chapo’ extradited to Australia: How Tse Chi Lop ran a multibillion-dollar meth empire

After a nearly two-year-long battle, Tse Chi Lop, Asia’s most-wanted alleged drug kingpin, has been extradited to Australia from The Netherlands. Also known as Asia’s El Chapo — a nod to the most powerful drug trafficker in the world — Tse Chi Lop was arrested in January 2021 after he landed at Amsterdam’s Schipol International Airport on a flight from the Taiwan. Australia’s charges against Tse relate to alleged operations from 2012 to 2013, where a A$4.4 million (Rs 25 crore) load of methamphetamine was trafficked into the country. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime has alleged Tse is the suspected leader of Sam Gor — which is sometimes simply referred to as “The Company” — that dominates the $70 billion-per-year…

Philadelphia man who spent 25 years on death row before acquittal is shot dead two years after release

Christopher Williams, 62, was fatally shot in the head around 2.20pm on 16 December at Mount Peace Cemetery in North Philadelphia, NBC reported. Williams had been attending a funeral at the time of the attack. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later declared dead. No suspects have been arrested. Williams was exonerated and acquitted of several murder charges and released in 2020 after spending 29 years in prison – 25 of those years on death row. The 1989 separate murder cases were tossed out decades later after an integrity unit found that Williams’ conviction was largely based on lying informants and misconduct by the prosecution. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) also found that evidence favouring…

Rishi Sunak told to ‘grow up’ as he ‘abdicates all responsibility’ of NHS strike action

The strikes by NHS workers in England and Wales has seen health bosses warn that they “cannot guarantee patient safety” during the walk outs. Brits are being warned to use emergency NHS services “wisely” and only calling 999 when there is a life-threatening emergency. In the Telegraph, the Health Secretary stated that the unions and the striking NHS workers are consciously “inflicting harm on patients”. Mr Barclay wrote: “We now know that the NHS contingency plans will not cover all 999 calls. “Ambulance unions have made a conscious choice to inflict harm on patients.” Mr Barclay added that contingency planning for the complications of the strike action is “almost impossible” despite unions saying it is the stubbornness of the Government causing the…

‘The world is watching’: Sunak warns Taliban after women banned from universities

Taliban security forces in Kabul have been blocking women from entering universities after the group instructed public and private universities across the country on Tuesday to immediately suspend access to female students until further notice. The decision was made by the Taliban-led administration’s cabinet but it has not given a reason and has so far not reacted to global condemnation. On Wednesday, Mr Sunak, who has two young daughters, added his criticism as he tweeted: “As a father to daughters, I cannot imagine a world in which they’re denied an education. © Reuters “The women of Afghanistan have so much to offer. Denying them access to university is a grave step backwards. “The world is watching. We will judge the Taliban by their actions.” The…
