Don Atiq Ahmad’s son Asad killed in an encounter in UP’s Jhansi

Gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad, who is wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, was killed in an encounter on Thursday by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi. The police had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information on Asad. Another accused in the case, Ghulam, with a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head, was also killed in the encounter led by Deputy SP Navendu and Deputy SP Vimal.

UP STF ADG Amitabh Yash said the team had been tracking Asad and Ghulam for the last one and a half months. He said they last missed Gulam by a delay of just five minutes but they successfully traced him to Jhansi where he was killed in the encounter.

Our correspondent in Jhansi said Asad and Ghulam were on a bike when the police asked them to stop for routine checking. They did not stop and started firing on the police. The STF team had fired back at them and the two were killed in the ensuing gunfire.

Several sophisticated foreign-made weapons were also recovered from the deceased.

Asad’s encounter came on a day when his father Atiq Ahmed was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Prayagraj in the Umesh Pal murder case.

Special Additional Director General (Law and Order) Prasahant Kumar said both Asad and Ghulam had a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on their heads. The encounter took place near the Pariksha Dam in Jhansi. Police said both the deceased were hiding in the area and a close aide of Atiq Ahmed was sheltering them.

Police teams are still carrying out search operations in the area.

It can be noted that in March, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav had said one of Atiq Ahmed’s sons would be shot soon. Two of Atiq’s sons are accused in the Umesh Pal murder case.
