Heavy rains lash several parts of Hyderabad on Monday; IMD issues yellow alert

Hyderabad: Heavy rains accompanied by thunder lashed several parts of Hyderabad on Monday evening, bringing down the temperatures and inundating low-lying areas and busy thoroughfares.

The torrential rain impacted the commuter traffic, as roads at vital junctions in Hyderabad came under sheets of rainwater. Huge traffic gridlocks were reported along several stretches including Begumpet-Punjagutta, Secunderabad, Banjara Hills and main roads in Madhapur and Rajendranagar area.

The southern and central parts of Hyderabad reported massive thunderstorms that remained active for nearly an hour. Areas that reported widespread thundershowers include Uppal, Nagole, LB Nagar, Tarnaka, Boduppal, Amberpet, OU, Nampally, Abids, Mehdipatnam and Malakpet. Several parts of Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Ameerpet, and Punjagutta also received widespread showers.

After the brief lull in the last few days, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely to pound the State capital from Tuesday, triggered by a monsoon trough. Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) predicts rain across the city for the next two days. Moderate rainfall (15.60 mm-64.40mm) is predicted at Charminar, LB Nagar, Rajendranagar, Malakpet, Falaknuma, and Chandrayangutta while only light rainfall is expected in other parts of the city on Tuesday.

All other districts in the State too are likely to witness light to moderate rain for the next two days. The India Meteorological Department – Hyderabad (IMD-H) has issued a yellow alert for Narayanpet, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Karimnagar, and Rajanna Sircilla districts on Tuesday.

DRF teams swing into action

The monsoon action teams and Disaster Response Force (DRF) of GHMC were pressed into service following the downpour on Monday evening. In addition to clearing water-logged roads, municipal staff attended to rain-related complaints that were reported through GHMC helpline number (040-2111 1111).

Complaints raised through Twitter and the ones reported by elected representatives including corporators were also attended to.

The monsoon teams and DRF also pumped out inundated water from low-lying areas that were inundated. Shaikpet – Tolichowki stretch, Khairatabad, Reinbazar, Musarambagh and Attapur are some among many areas where the teams took up monsoon works to bring back normalcy.

Areas that received the highest rainfall

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society officials, the areas under GHMC that received the highest rainfall by 9 pm on Monday include Nampally (94.5mm), Gunfoundry (87.8mm), Mehdipatnam (85mm), Khairatabad (75.5mm), Saroornagar (75.3mm), Rajendranagar (67.5mm), Vittalvadi (65.3 mm), Ziaguda Karvan (64.3 mm) and Malakpet (62.8 mm).
