Revanth Reddy likens himself to Indira Gandhi, NTR

Makes yet another promise, incidentally one borrowed from previous BRS government’s plans to establish rice mills in every mandal

HYDERABAD: Barely 15 months after becoming Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy on Saturday attempted to elevate himself to the stature of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and former Chief Minister of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh NT Rama Rao.

“In the past, Indira Gandhi was called ‘Amma’ and NT Rama Rao was called ‘Anna’. Today, you are calling me ‘Revanth Anna’. I am your family member and I will take the responsibility of your family,” he said at an Indira Mahila Shakti programme organised on the occasion of International Women’s Day here.

Revanth Reddy also said that drawing motivation from Indira Gandhi’s ‘shakti’, NT Rama Rao’s ‘yukthi’ (skill) and his own ‘spoorthi’ (inspiration), one crore women would be made crorepatis and make Telangana surge towards becoming a one trillion USD economy.

Interestingly, even as he tried to position himself alongside political stalwarts like Indira Gandhi and NTR, Revanth Reddy continued his habit of blaming the Opposition. Obviously stung by the severe criticism over the government’s failures that led to the SLBC tunnel incident, similar irrigation mishaps and the continuing agrarian crisis, Revanth Reddy said opposition parties were celebrating such incidents and deriving pleasure instead of sharing suggestions.

Not uttering a single word about the promises made to the women of Telangana before the 2023 Assembly elections, he made yet another promise, incidentally one borrowed from the previous BRS government’s plans to establish rice mills in every mandal. Revanth Reddy tweaked that into rice mills for women self help groups in every mandal along with warehouses to procure and store stocks from farmers. He also promised land and loans for women to construct such warehouses and to set up rice mills.

Interestingly, even as he claimed that he was being called ‘Revanth Anna’, critics on social media had a field day on Saturday, posting videos that showed women venting their fury and anger with the choicest of abuses at Revanth Reddy for failing them on multiple counts.
