Veteran Telugu actor Krishna passes away

Veteran Telugu actor Krishna passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at Continental Hospitals, Gachibowli. Popularly known as ‘Super Star’ Krishna, the 79-year-old actor was on ventilator support at the hospital after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest on Monday.

Krishna was brought to the hospital’s emergency department at 1.15 am on Monday morning with cardiac arrest. The doctors had immediately performed CPR and resuscitated him within 20 minutes. Since then, the actor was on ventilator support at Continental Hospitals.

In a film-career that spanned for nearly five decades, Krishna has appeared in over 350 films in a variety of roles. In 2009, he was awarded Padma Bhushan for his contributions to Indian cinema. He was also elected as Member of Parliament from Congress in 1989 and in 1997, he received Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award-South.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has condoled the demise of Krishna, whose fans fondly call him “Superstar”. He remembered the services rendered by Krishna to the Telugu film industry for five decades as an actor, producer, director and head of a production company. He extended deepest condolences to the family members of Krishna.

The Chief Minister said that the demise of Krishna, who acted in more than 350 films and left an indelible mark on the hearts of moviegoers, was a huge loss for the Telugu film industry. Apart from various family drama films, Krishna was popular as an actor of social films that created social consciousness among the people. He recalled that the working class of yester years considered Krishna as their favourite hero and superstar. CM KCR expressed his deepest condolences to the family members of Krishna.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao also instructed Chief Secretary S Somesh Kumar to perform the last rites of veteran actor Krishna with State honours. Funeral to be held at Mahaprasthanam at Jubilee Hills on Wednesday.
